New Mexico has become the latest state to legalize recreational marijuana. On Monday, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the legislation into law making New Mexico the seventeenth state to legalize cannabis.
“It is good for workers. It is good for entrepreneurs. It is good for consumers,” Lujan Grisham said. “And it brings about social justice in ways in which we have been talking about and advocating for, for decades.”
The law will take effect on June 29, 2021, and people over the age of 21 will be allowed to possess up to two ounces of marijuana. While local governments can set their own rules about hours of operation and zoning, they cannot prohibit marijuana businesses altogether. The law stipulates that the issuance of licenses to sell recreational weed shall begin by January 1, 2022 and that the launch of recreational sales will start no later than April 1, 2022.
