What’s Legal in Each Recreational Marijuana State

USA Recreational Cannabis Laws by State

Updated June, 2024

Until marijuana is legalized at a federal level in the United States, marijuana law is determined by each individual state. This means, there are 50 different marijuana laws which vary from completely legal for all adults over 21, legal for medical patients only, or completely illegal.

Among the 20 states with legal recreational marijuana sales, there are differences in the methods of sales allowed, amounts that can be sold, amounts that can be possessed and even the maximum THC percentage allowed. Select one of the legal recreational states from the menu above for the laws in that state.

Buying Recreational Weed is as easy as...

  • Go to a Recreational Pot Shop

Go to a recreational weed dispensary, located in 20 states.

  • Present your I.D.

Anyone over the age of 21 can buy weed legally in these states, no matter what state or country you are from. Just show your valid driver’s license, passport, or state-issued I.D. to enter the dispensary.

  • Select your LEGAL WEED

Choose your favorite flower, oil, wax, shatter, or edibles.

  • Purchase your LEGAL WEED

Use cash or (if available) a debit card to buy your weed. Pot shops can’t accept credit cards, but many do take debit. Usually there is an ATM on-site if you need cash.

  • Enjoy your LEGAL WEED

Find a place on private property to enjoy your purchases. For visitors from out of state, a hotel room with a balcony, a hotel smoking room, or a 420-friendly vacation rental is your best bet.
