Colorado’s first marijuana drive-thru opened up in Parachute, Colorado on April 20. The Tumbleweed Express is a converted car wash off of Interstate 70 in Western Colorado, about 45 miles Northeast of Grand Junction. The drive-thru incorporates the old carwash doors to allow one vehicle into the purchasing area of the drive-thru at a time. Before entering, drivers place their order via a typical drive-thru communication system on the menu sign (similar to a fast food restaurant).
The new drive-thru is the sixth Tumbleweed location and the second outlet in Parachute. Because it is an “express” dispensary, they don’t have the full menu of marijuana strains that they carry at their main stores. However, customers will not have to leave the comfort of their vehicle to purchase their weed. All passengers in the vehicle must be over 21 years old to enter the drive-thru.
The grand opening featured food trucks, live music, radio broadcasts and product giveaways. The owner, Mark Smith, was amazed when the opening gained national attention. “I didn’t set out thinking this would be national news,” he told the Post Independent.
Parachute, a small town of about 1,100 residents, is appreciative of the publicity and revenue the dispensary has brought to the community. “Tumbleweed has been a good neighbor and has made large investments into town”, Parachute Town Manager Stuart McArthur told the Post Independent. “We’re excited to have Tumbleweed here and get on the map with something that is totally unique.”
