About this property

Magic Barn, Walk Score 93!

Your safety is our top priority. We are following VRBO's advanced cleaning guidelines. Our neighborhood is among the safest and most peaceful in Portland.

The Magic Barn is in the heart of Hawthorne, a charming restaurant and boutique shopping district, accessible by walking 3 blocks to SE Hawthorne and SE Division Streets, past beautiful vintage Portland homes and gardens.

The Magic Barn is also centrally located 15 minutes to the airport, 10 minutes to the convention center, and 10 minutes to downtown Portland. There are four bus stops and rental bikes within three blocks, and ample free street parking on our block.

We require our guests to write us a message with a little information about themselves and their trip. We hope that this will help provide a safer environment for guests, neighbors, and hosts. Please share a little information about yourself and your trip when you book; we will send you the door code after we receive this information.

You have your own entrance through the "Star Gate", to the backyard of the main house. The Magic Barn is its own separate unit with small kitchen and bath with a claw foot bathtub. We list the claw foot tub on VRBO as a "Spa Whirlpool" (which is the only check box option to describe it) so that hot bath people can find their way to a hot bath at the Magic Barn. Enjoy!

The Magic Barn was built in1936 and was Todji's sculpture studio for fifteen years, until he transformed it with old growth barn wood, 3 large skylights, small kitchen, claw foot tub, vintage furnishings, and a sculpture garden full of Todji's sculptures.

The Magic Barn can be rented in conjunction with The Magic House (4 bedrooms with 3 full bathroom) to create lots of space for a large group of 8 or more people. Please message us regarding large group capacity.

The Magic House is booked separately; see Vrbo listing: 1354291

From 2000 to 2015 the Magic Barn was Todji's sculpture studio. Most of the sculptures in the sculpture garden were designed right here and are exhibited for our guests to enjoy!

The sculpture garden is shared space with other guests staying at The Magic House, your hosts, gardeners, maintenance people, etc. Please exchange friendly hellos, make friends, respect privacy, and practice social distancing when appropriate.

We are available to assist you during your stay in person, text, phone or VRBO messaging. Your co-host Hobie lives onsite and is available for friendly help and also to respect privacy. Todji lives nearby.

We all work full time and are active so we leave casual interaction up to the ease and flow of everyone's schedules. We tend to meet our guests more often in the summer, and less often when it is cold or raining.

We are very centrally located, and along with that convenience comes street traffic that is visible when entering and exiting. The main house is called "The Magic House", and it is on a fairly busy four lane street. The Magic Barn is set far back from the street and past guests have written in their reviews that the Magic Barn is "tranquil", "quiet" and "serene".

The bathroom doors have some decorative glass and open windows to the main space high above. If you are visually or audibly very modest please take a look at the photos of the bathroom doors and upper windows before booking.

We operate with a short term rental permit with the city of Portland.

Hobie is your onsite host, and he is a novelist and professional writer. Please text him if you need anything during your stay. We we give work at the Magic House to community artists.

Todji produces public art bronze sculpture monuments for US cities which you may already have seen, or that you hopefully will see one day. The sculpture collection rotates to different galleries and exhibitions, so some sculptures may not be there, and others may be in their place.

We hope to host you at the Magic Barn!
Love and health,
Todji & Hobie

Perfect certralized stay
I booked this location to see a concert at the Hawthorne Theater, which was just a short walk away. Everything I could have needed was within walking distance and the property itself was beautiful. The Magic Barn was exactly as described and felt magical, it was so cute and quaint and super comfortable. I hope to stay here again when I'm in town for my next concert!

Cozy Place in a Great Neighborhood
We had a lovely stay at the magic barn. There were lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance and it's a great neighborhood. Felt very safe walking around. The Magic Barn was tidy and had all the amenities we needed for our stay.

Just as pictured.
It’s a cozy little place to hold up in for a night or two. The host gives an accurate description of what it is like. I didn’t expect to see his artwork in the yard which was a treat.

A few minutes walk away from the Hawthorn Theatre where I attended a concert. Felt safe and was pretty quiet for all the traffic that comes by. Be prepared to lug your items in unless you paid for driveway parking. The space is small and cozy, perfect for one or two people. I wish there was a microwave, but that may just be my laziness talking because the toaster oven did well for most things. The only thing slightly confusing is the tub being listed as a hot tub. It explains it in the papers sent, but it's still kinda confusing when you go to look at your reservation on Vrbo and see hot tub and think "oh, I didn't remember that! How exciting!", then get disappointed. Maybe it's my short memory span though.

Your host Todji is an artist. He is a sculptor, musician, curandero and hospitality artist! Todji has been restoring The Magic House since 2000. The Magic Barn was a twisted old shed when he arrived as a renter. Todji purchased the Magic House as a self employed artist in 2004 and continued to rent rooms to friends and artists while he restored it during the day and sculpted at night. Todji was born in San Francisco California, came to Portland in 1998, and lived in Brazil and Peru for three years. Todji speaks English, Portuguese and Spanish.

Why they chose this property

When I moved into the Magic House in 2000 as a renter, it was not magic. It was a neglected old rental house in a run down neighborhood that had two Thai restaurants, both with musty, old shag carpet. The rent was cheap and there was a lot of space to set up a small sculpture studio in the center of the city. I had been restoring the house for about ten years when one day I looked up and noticed that everyone else had been fixing up their houses, and many cool boutiques and independent restaurants had sprouted up on Hawthorne and Division! The community had transformed the neighborhood into a hopping and beautiful scene! Come and enjoy! It is lovely to walk through the residential streets to nearby restaurants and boutiques!

What makes this property unique

The Magic House is a landmark of Portland culture for many artists and musicians. Before VRBO it was home to many local artists, a handful who blossomed into international recognition! When Todji first moved into the main house as a renter, the Magic Barn was a twisted old shed with broken windows, no electricity or heat and it was filled with trash. Todji turned it into his sculpture studio, and then purchased the house in 2004 when banks were giving loans to anyone, including self-employed artists! Todji rented rooms to other artists while restoring the old house and building his career as a fine art sculptor between 2000 and 2017. Todji now produces public art bronze sculpture monuments for US cities which you may already have seen, or that you may see one day. Enjoy the rotating sculpture collection! The sculptures travel to different exhibitions; so some of the sculptures in the photos may or may not be present during your stay, and other new ones may be in their place. Please take my sculpture card, visit my sculpture site, and stay in touch!
